    The Process Engineer provides shop floor support for manufacturing methods and processes in machining as well as support for the machine shop strategy and vision. Maintains documentation and ensures the accuracy of labor standards. Initiates improvements in current manufacturing methods and processes to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist in developing and implementing measures to improve processes, including quality, throughput, setups, equipment uptime and cycle times, making recommendations and working in conjunction with continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Partner with project engineer and determine make vs. buy decisions based on capability, capacity and cost.
    • May determine appropriate machine platform for product and lead any necessary capital equipment requirements. Recommend capital equipment additions and develop appropriate justifications. Effectively manage the implementation and commissioning of such additions.
    • Create conceptual designs for fixtures, gauges and special cutting tools. May conduct tool design reviews with tooling personnel, purchasing personnel, and outside tool suppliers.
    • Participate in print review, partner with Quality Engineering on determining gauges and measurement procedures. Facilitate and support Statistical Process Control of critical to quality components as defined by engineering control documents. 
    • Complete activities using behaviors and tools of the MSA Operating System including KPI Management, Performance Tracking, Standard Cadence of Review, and Problem Solving.
    • Utilize specific lean tools including OEE, SMED, Standard Work, Visual Controls, and facilitate Root Cause Analysis.
    • Actively participate on NPD teams led by product engineering. Provide input to ensure that proposed designs are realistic, feasible, and designed for manufacturability.
    • Initiate drawing changes with the product design engineer to improve manufacturing quality and reduce costs.
    • May provide tooling selection input in partnership with the Sr. Machine Operator.
    • Troubleshoot CNC programming or technical production issues on the production floor and coordinate necessary program changes with the appropriate Sr. Machine Operator.
    • Responsible for the investigation of change requests received (E-Flag, ECN), their rejection or approval, development and implementation of any process changes and proper documentation of any such changes.
    • Maintain all process planning documentation for assigned work cells; including purchase requests, capital appropriation requests, inventory approval forms.
    • Working with the appropriate groups, maintain manufacturing process sheets for all machining, assembly, and finishing operations.
    • Train shop employees on improvements to manufacturing methods, products and new production equipment.
    • May partner with Quality in risk management activities (i.e.: PFMEA)
    • Travel as required for company business transactions.

    Qualifications

    Demonstrated ability to:

    • Independently manage multiple tasks, solve technical problems, lead projects, and work effectively in cross-functional teams
    • Drive execution of projects including the ability to identify and act upon potential improvements.
    • Understand machine platforms and G-code programming
    • Read and interpret assembly diagrams with understanding of quality testing and measurement techniques and procedure
    • Provide strong communication and interpersonal skills, both oral and written
    • Understand safety regulations and ergonomic principles
    • Work well under pressure and maintain positive, enthusiastic attitude
    • Work effectively in a team environment and build strong working relationships.
    • Participate in continuous improvement activities

     

    Preferred:

    • Previous experience using risk management tools such as PFMEA’s or other control plans
    • Working knowledge of industry standards and regulatory requirements
    • Society of Manufacturing Engineers certification.
    • Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement experience

     

    Education and experience required: 

     

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

    This position is available at three different career levels based upon experience and education:

    • Level one (Staff II):  2 years of relevant experience required including 1 year of hands-on technical experience in a machining environment
    • Level two (Staff III):  3 years of relevant experience required including 1 year of hands-on technical experience in a machining environment
    • Level three (Sr. Staff): 5 years of relevant experience including 1 year of hands-on technical experience in a machining environment
